Thin insulated material help to make more turns in a short area and capable for heat absorb. Common copper wire insulated with thick material which can required more area for more turns, as a result, winding will not work efficiently and can melt insulation in heat.

Magnet wire is coated with an enamel insulation vs a plastic or rubber coating. This makes the insulation thinner and allows for a more compact winding and hence denser magnetic field in the coil.

Magnet wire also comes in thinner gauges and is solid wire vs regular wire which has larger sizes and also comes in a stranded version.

Consider the thicker plastic coatings as wasted space. Though you could use “regular wire” as this is an experiment if you cannot find a source of “Magnet” wire

Magnet wire has a very special insulation, regular copper wire won’t work as well.
